During my first period at UPNA, I studied the effects of management on nutrient cycles in northern Spain, and I created an ecological model to define the limits of sustainable harvesting in the western Pyrenees. Then, my research at UBC was centered on the development and evaluation of ecological models to simulate the influence of management, climate and other ecological factors on tree growth, to assess the long-term sustainability of management practices. Models are important tools to develope new management plans for carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, bioenergy and other values. Now, working again at UPNA, I am using ecological models to explore the effects of climate change, atmospheric pollution and alternative forest practices in natural and planted forest in boreal, temperate and tropical areas. I have co-authored the first book dedicated to the use of ecological models in forest management, entitled "Forecasting Forest Futures" (Earthscan Ltd.). |
